VCR -- Not Run by the Mill

All too often technology is the hired help of those who believe bigger is better. TCP/IP (the Internet) and woodworking CNC, two recent technologies with "small is beautiful" attributes, are therefore welcomed by designers/makers.

Internet Web technology allows British Columbia Wood Design to introduce its on-line journal format at a fraction of the cost required for a traditional print journal. Value-Created Review (VCR) can express opinions freely because it is not tied to advertising revenue or other funding sources. However, as "mediums" require "messages," VCR extends an invitation to all designers and manufacturers to make a contribution to the journal.

CNC woodworking technology (and related CAD/CAM software) is shaping up to be as influential to wood product manufacturing as the Internet is to free communication. Until the introduction of affordable CNC point-to-point and routing machines in the early 1990s, traditional woodworking technology was geared to the production of large quantities of the same product. CNC technology has turned this notion on its head by making it almost as economical to make one cabinet as a thousand.

As with on-line journal technology, CNC technology has a "use it or lose it" component. To this end VCR is preparing a special issue devoted to help you take advantage of this new appropriate technology, so visit the site again soon.
