The International Furniture Design Fair in Asahikawa Japan is holding its third triennial furniture design competition with the theme Design with Love, Life with Wood.
The entries must have wood as a major component and be submitted on 35mm slide before January 20, 1999. Each entry (no limit) must be accompanied by a 5,000 Yen ($64.50 CND) [*] registration fee.
In their promotional information the organizers express the intent and philosophy of the competition in the following words:
"We think that furniture is essential in our daily lives. At the same time, it represents lifestyles. Thus, we believe, furniture should be well-designed and equipped to deal with the new needs of consumers."
"We also think that as with universal designs, designs must keep up with the changing society and environment and should express new relationships between human beings and their lives, between human beings and furniture as well as between human beings and the
environment. We believe that designs should contribute to the creation of a better life and a society."
From the slide submissions the judges (see sidebar) select 35 entries that will be shipped to the fair at the sponsor's expense. The 8 finalists will be selected in mid-May for one of the following awards:
- Grand Prize - 3,000,000 Yen
($38,700 CDN)
- Gold - 1,000,000 Yen
($12,900 CDN)
- Silver - 500,000 Yen x 2
($6,450 CDN each)
- Bronze - 300,000 Yen x 4
($3,870 CDN each)

A Danish architect, cabinet maker and furniture designer with particular interest in environmentally friendly design.
Sir Terence Conran
A British designer, retailer and restauranteur. His Conran Foundation supports the Design Museum, London and promotes links between designers and industry.
